Historic Halifax Set the Stage for American Independence

Historic Halifax

Months before the founding fathers gathered in Philadelphia to craft the Declaration of Independence‚ colonists in North Carolina adopted the Halifax Resolves‚ proclaiming the colony’s independence from British rule.

Today‚ that historic initiative is celebrated year-round‚ when Roanoke Valley citizens honor the bravery of those men.

On Halifax Day‚ interpreters demonstrate a variety of Colonial activities‚ ranging from quiltmaking to woodworking‚ and there are guided tours of Historic Halifax‚ a 40-acre re-creation of the early Roanoke River port settlement.

Many of the historic buildings have been restored to their 18th- and 19th-century appearance‚ offering a living legacy to those courageous founding fathers who asserted their rights for freedom.
