The New Halifax County Visitor Center Opens in Roanoke Rapids

Visitor Center

The new visitor center is a beacon to the many travelers on Interstate 95.

Visitors to Halifax County will find everything they need in one convenient location.

The Halifax County Convention & Visitors Bureau‚ the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce‚ the Halifax County Economic Development Commission and the City of Roanoke Rapids Economic Development organization now reside under one roof in the Halifax County Visitor Center‚ which opened in early 2007.

Located off Interstate 95 at exit 173‚ just minutes south of the Virginia/North Carolina border‚ the new $500‚000 Visitor Center rolls out the red carpet for travelers.

Video clips of area events and attractions play on a 52-inch screen in the lobby; Internet access ports‚ public restrooms and‚ of course‚ Halifax County’s trademark peanuts extend a warm welcome. The building also has meeting facilities.

“We have created ‘one stop shopping’ for visitors to our area‚” says Lori Medlin‚ executive director of the Halifax County Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Retail‚ industrial and business developers can find all the information they need under one roof.”

Allen Purser‚ president and CEO of the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce‚ echoes Medlin’s comments.

“The new building is a professional environment for the chamber to be in‚” Purser says. “Visitors can get information on attractions and things to do in the valley from the Convention & Visitors Bureau‚ find out about local businesses from the chamber of commerce and get information on opening a business or moving a business into the area from the economic development commission.”

More than 50 local businesses and organizations helped sponsor the project. The new visitor center is‚ according to Purser‚ the Roanoke Valley’s “window to the world.”
